This is the 78th Anniversary of the martyrdom of Joseph
Smith the Prophet and Hyrum Smith the Patriarch. By prearrangement a night
service was held in the Temple in commemoration of the event, and over three
hundred persons were present by special invitation, and officiated in behalf of
the dead kindred of the Smith family. President Heber J. Grant, six of the
Apostles, the Presiding Patriarch, and other General Authorities participated.
It was preeminently fitting that the event which meant so much in the carrying
out of the Gospel plan, involving the death of the first prophet of this
dispensation and the brother and patriarch, should be commemorated by sacred
ordinances in behalf of the dead. I regard the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum as
an inevitable development of the reestablishment of the Church upon the earth
in these last days; for the death of the testators was essential to complete
validation of their testament. (James E. Talmage, Journal, June 27, 1922)
