Titus of Bostra (d. 378) on Luke 1:34

English translation:

"Perhaps Mary rightly asks, not as one unbelieving or contradicting, but as one wisely inquiring about the manner of the event. Therefore, she is not reproached but is taught the manner of this extraordinary birth. Zechariah said, 'How shall I know this?' seeking a sign to believe, despite having many examples from the past — Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, Hannah — all giving birth by the power of God. But the virgin says, 'How will this be?' Her statement is credible, but the manner is unfamiliar; nature does not know it, she says. Therefore, the angel consents, for such a thing has not happened before nor will it happen again after this. And so, I say, the virgin gives birth."
