. . . the contrast between that which is “made with hands”
(cheiropoiēton) and that which is “made without hands” (acheiropoieton)
draws from that which “belongs to this age and that which belongs to the age to
come.” Morna Booker points out that there were some Jewish expectations that God
would rebuild his temple in three days. This distinction is based on an
eschatological worldview that distinguishes between “this age” and the “age to
come,” while allowing for some overlap. The Jewish opponents of Jesus did not explicitly
reject the notion that things which belong to the age to come could break into
the present age, but they did reject that such a status belonged to Jesus’
