The following is a transcription of Charles R. Thomas, Letter to John Taylor, January 8, 1880. Thomas was a resident of Samaria, Idaho. Alongside Thomas, it was addressed to Taylor by "Also quite a number of brethren and Neighbors" who were seeking answers to the following query:
To Mr. John Taylor
Dear Brother.
Pardon my intrusion there
has arisen quite a division of feeling in this place as well as throughout the
Valley in regard to the Doctrine preached by Charles Crabtree Senior a man that
I suppose you are well acquainted with.
He asserts that Adam is the
god that Created the Heavens and the earth and that he is the father of Jesus
Christ our advocate and Redeemer. Furthermore he asserts that those who believe
not that that doctrine shall be cursed will fall and go to hell.
Now Taylor we wish your
views on the subject whether we shall take this or the Doctrine as we
understand it in the Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants and Other
Church books
Note that Charles R. Thomas et al. believed that the
default position of the Church was against the Adam-God Theory,
especially in light of the Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, “and
other Church books.”
