I once read a while ago that Mark E. Petersen's "Race Problems–As They Affect the Church" (August 27, 1954) was a modern forgery by the Tanners(!) One of the arguments is that there was no evidence of any convention held on that date and there is no indication Joseph Fielding Smith was actually in attendance at the time.
I requested the journal from Joseph Fielding Smith from
the Church History Library. The following is from the Joseph Fielding Smith
papers, 1893-1973, MS 4250. The "journal" is more of a daybook with
very short entries. Here is the transcription the CHL kindly sent me:
BYU institute teacher MEP on
race problems. Afternoon office.
I have not seen anyone repeat this failed apologetic, and
I think this journal entry is the death knell to any attempt to revive
it.
