Needed is a further analysis of BB 14b–15a. Are we
dealing in this text with an authoritative ancient list or is it evident from
this passage that a certain tradition is being defended against critics? Also
to be noted is that in this passage the emphasis is not so much on the fixation
of the correct scope but on the precise order of the Bible books. Furthermore,
it can be said not only of the number 22 but also of the number 24, the number
that is mentioned in BB, that it has an artificial feel to it (twice the number
of months or of the tribes of Israel). In any case the argumentation for the
order as Baba Bathra has it gives a decidedly artificial impression. (H. G. L.

Canon of the Old Testament,” Zeitschrift für die alttestamentliche
Wissenschaft 113, no. 4 [2001], 593)
