“the days of her purification”: αι ημεραι του
καθαρισμου αυτων, from the Levitical law (Lv 12:1-8), a woman who had given
birth was unclean for seven days, and then an additional thirty-three days in
which she could touch nothing holy or go into the sanctuary. After these forty
days (7 + 33), she had to go to the Temple to be purified. The Greek has του
καθαρισμου αυτων (“the purification of them”), which refers to Joseph and Mary
as a couple such that Joseph is in charge of making sure Mary performs the
ritual. (Robert A. Sungenis, Commentary on the Douay-Rheims New Testament
from the Original Greek and Latin, 4 vols. [State Line, Pa.: Catholic
Apologetics International Publishing, Inc., 2024], 2:60 n. 96)
