Some of the more low IQ Trinitarian apologists (well, those who use low IQ co-authors) appeal to how purportedly "clunky" John 20:17 is to claim that how God the Father is the "Father" and "God" to Jesus differs from how he is our God and Father. Using this "logic," we could have a field day with Ruth’s words as recorded in Ruth 1:16.
The
LXX of Ruth 1:16 reads:
εἶπεν δὲ Ῥούθ Μὴ ἀπαντήσαι ἐμοὶ τοῦ
καταλιπεῖν σε ἢ ἀποστρέψαι ὄπισθέν σου· ὅτι σὺ ὅπου ἐὰν πορευθῇς, πορεύσομαι,
καὶ οὗ ἐὰν αὐλισθῇς αὐλισθήσομαι· ὁ λαός σου λαός μου, καὶ ὁ θεός σου θεός μου·
The Lexham
English Septuagint (2d ed.) translates the Greek as follows:
But Ruth said, “Do not plead with me to
leave you or to turn back from following you. For wherever you go, I will go;
and wherever you dwell, I will dwell; your people will be my people, and your God
will be my God.
Of
course, if this was said by Jesus, not Ruth, some (not all) Trinitarian
apologists would claim how “clunky” the construction in the Greek is (same in
Hebrew, btw) how the Father is “God” to Jesus differs from how he is “God” to
believers. That should tell you a lot. But of course, the certain Trinitarian
apologist I have in mind does not are for the truth and instead, giving the
impression to easily duped Evangelicals he is a biblical scholar and “expert”
on Latter-day Saint issues–anything to keep the money coming in.
