These psalms are being mined for apologetic explanation of
the apostasy of Judas, one of the apostolic band chosen by Jesus himself, and
the use is the recognized Jewish interpretive technique qal waḥomer,
moving from what is said in these psalms about David’s suffering at the hands
of wicked people to Jesus’s suffering caused by Judas, whose actions were “uniquely
false and evil.” There is no reason to think that the earliest believers—in this
period before Pentecost—could not have made this link themselves, particularly given
that the risen Jesus had been educating them in how to read Scripture (Luke
