Eat, my Near Ones, drink and be drunken, my brethren.
As the other Gospel
writer says, ‘If you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood,
you have no life in your selves’ (Jn 6:53). Now, by HIs own drinking, and by
then giving it to the Disciples, He showed that the Church and the Bride were
to drink this very cup and become partakers in His death. Thus, the
sacrament which we carry out recalls His death; by placing the awesome
sacrifice on the altar before the Father, we hold up before the Father the
death which He died for us, and through it we anticipate salvation for
ourselves [Nyssa 989B-C]. (The Blessing of Blessings: Gregory
of Narek’s Commentary on the Song of Songs [trans. Robert Ervine;
