Ἡ μὲν οὖν τῶνδε μοι τῶν ὑπομνημάτων γραφὴ ἀσθενὴς μὲν εὖ
οἶδ' ὅτι, παραβαλλομένη πρὸς τὸ πνεῦμα ἐκεῖνο τὸ κεχαριτωμένον, οὗ
κατηξιώθημεν ὑπακοῦσαι· εἰκὼν δ᾽ ἂν εἴη ἀναμιμνήσκουσα τοὺς ἀρχετύπους τὸν θύρσῳ
πεπληγότα· « Σοφῷ γὰρ, φησὶ, λάλει, καὶ σοφώτερος ἔσται· καὶ τῷ ἔχοντι δὲ
προστεθήσεται. (PG 8:702, 704)
The writing of these recollections of mine, then, is
indeed weak—I know this well—when compared to that grace-filled spirit
to which we were deemed worthy to listen. Yet, it may still serve as an image,
reminding those struck by the thyrsus of the archetypes. For, as it is said,
“Speak to the wise, and he will become wiser; and to him who has, more shall be
given.”
